    Default auger bits

short answer - no as the auger relies on the worm to pull the cutter thru and it won't pull thru the last bit of thin timber. Other types, like spade bits and forstner bits rely on being pushed and cause breakout if not protected with a sacrificial block.
Don't force it, use a bigger hammer.

Timber is what you use. Wood is what you burn.

    Ratty's spot on.

Some augers, the better ones, have spurs that minimise this effect. Even then its best to use a sacrificial backing plate to stop breakout.

Can you not use the hole created by the worm to drill through from the other side?

Thanks for the contributions guys. It looks like the sacrificial back board is the only way.
Drilling from the other side is slower than us the back board.
One day some guy will come up with a better designed bit to overcome the problem. Hope he does so soon !!

    sure you can.

push! and turn the last few turns. Sure you get tear out, but it's good enough for rural work

if your bit has spurs (wing tips) on the end, it should cut a cleaner hole right through. Pull back the last few turns and the wings will slice the last remaining fibres and you'll get a cleaner hole.

Roy Underhill demo'd this with Chris S. on a woodwrights show some time back.
I'll see if i can find it.
