Awl review in AWR
I wonder who made the nice awl that is "not commercially available".
Well done mate.- Wood Borer

With all due respect to the author (who may have been edited heavily!?) I can't say I took much away from that review other than a few piccies. P'raps that shouldn't be all that surprising when you are dealing with such simple, basic tools. After all, a sharpened nail makes a very servicable awl, and just about any bit of semi-hard steel can be pressed into service as a marking knife, as has been amply demonstrated by numerous forumites. If you spend an extra half hour on it, you can even make one as attractive as the $60 examples (Sixty bucks for a scratch-awl!! ).
Maybe it's just my parsimonious nature, but I'd much rather spend my tool $$s on things I can't make as easily myself!
Grumpf!

I agree with you Ian. Nothing is more satisfying than using something you have made yourself whether it is a tool or a piece of furniture.
I my be wrong but I thought the awl I mentioned might have been made by our Funkychicken which is why I started this thread.
Whether or not it was made by FC it still looks OK to me.- Wood Borer

Ta Rob
There was a bit of a misunderstanding about whether I was selling the awls (which I am.) I was a bit miffed that all I got was a picture and no text (I know you'll read this Raf)
Ian if you think $60 is too much you won't want a Colen Clenton awl for $228

You are dead right there, FC. I forgot about that one, I thought $60 was absurd, but words fail me (which is most uncharacteristic!) when confronted by that sort of figure......
I think Colen's stuff is excellent, & he's a nice bloke, but that's just playing to conspicuous consumerism. Of course, if I were in his shoes, & could command such prices, I'm sure I would hold a diferent view.
I think these sorts of tools are like benches - you make them yourself to suit yourself, and if your skill & inclinations are up to it, you can make them fancy. Otherwise, a very basic tool does an equally fine job.
