As far as I know Carbatech and Timbecon blades are all carbon steel. I doubt there is any significant difference between their carbon steel blades and those from other suppliers. In terms of blade longevity the way the operator treats the blades is likely to have much more significance.
What the "other" suppliers can provide are things like bimetal and carbide tipped blades which will last a lot longer than carbon steel. But dont expect to treat them like dirt and have them last.
I don't use small bandsaw blades often enough on wood to comment on the difference in life times between carbon and bimetal blades but I do have a small metal working bandsaw and the difference in lifetimes in cutting steel is about 3-4 times.

Hi HF. Not sure where in Melbourne you are but I get my BS blades from Timber Tools in Bayswater. Custom lengths no problem. They are also starting to make a lot of their own carbide cutters. Great people to deal with.

For future readers of this thread in the northern suburbs, I get my BS blades made to order at Northern Sharpening Service in Reservoir. They use Starrett bi-metal blade stock. Also have a hefty range of carbitool bits in stock, and good circular saw blades. It’s my goto for all machine blades. Their sharpening service is ace too.

A trick I use when freehand sawing logs on a bandsaw is to move the fence up to about 1" from the blade.
With smaller logs it helps to keep the log from rolling.
With larger logs (200mm to 300mm) the log will usually hang over the fence, giving good support.
I always have a trusted helper with good strong hands assisting on the out feed side of the machine (a wadkin BZB20").
The point of this cut is to put a flat side on the log, which can then be rotated down so I have good support when cutting the logs into 1/2 round billets.
I regularly do 5 to 10 logs a day this way.
As BobL points out though, this is not to be recommended for the inexperienced, as a solo effort, or on an unfamiliar machine. It is definitely not recommended on an under powered machine.

Yeah, I buggered the blade chopping across the branch, as opposed to along the branch. Was hoping to get some blanks to turn not boards..
