    Default My bench is finished...almost

It has been a while since I started getting ideas and looking around the Net and in books for ideas and notes for my bench. This Summer (August 2007 -Japan) I started building it by putting the top together.

I used the top on some saw benches for some time but bit by bit got things done. And here it is...

    CIMG3176 (Medium).JPGCIMG2946 (Medium).JPGCIMG2951 (Medium).JPG

The left hand picture is of the bench finished. The two on the right are of the bench before the jaws were leveled with the top.

The only thing I have to do now is put some wax on it. I put some Watco oil on it so far. But finding paste wax here is proving difficult for me. Most of the wax I is liquid floor wax.

I have wriiten up the saga on my blog which I started just for this and my shed. The shed is up, but I have to write it up yet.

Anyway if you are wanting to have a look here is my Blog link for this project.
    http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...og.php?u=12585
Go back to page 4 at the moment or the furtherest back since the page numbers will change over time. This was my first blog post so just go the beginning of the blog.

The darker picture, taken at night (sorry, yet to take another shot) also shows my wall layout for my tools. I have just knocked the shelves together with some left over ply and OSB from the shed. this is to just see how things work before I decide on the final layout. Then I will put some nicer shelves etc in.

What do you think of the layout? Any comments as to the layout? Any alternatives?

Wax - can I use car wax? There is a Wilson's Carnuba wax. All Japanese instructions but I can't find any mention of silicone so it should be silicone free and cutting compound free.

Or can I just put liquid floor wax on it?

There's a really cheap brand that's also silicone free. Y700 a short can last time I bought it. Can't remember the name, but it smells nice.

Use it. Good stuff, no dramas with finish using it.

Most others do have silicone or compound or both. I have a can here at home that's had about a teaspoon used out of it. Stupid me didn't read the label properly...

Johnson's floor wax I think, unsure though so maybe suss out the ingredients.

    Thumbs up

Mate let me tell you something. The first picture would make a bloody good WW poster.

I like the bench. It has a simple set up. It is very similar to mine.

Just one question. In picture 1, the apron and the rear jaw are flush on the top but they aren’t in picture 2 and 3. The apron appears to be a bit lower in pic 2,3. Am I missing something?

I hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out, it certainly looks that way doesn't it.

Great work Rob it looks terrific.

    Hi Rob,

Yes, beautiful bench there mate. I likes it. Agree with Wongo too, picture 1 could be a WW magazine cover.

    Well done.

Bl**dy Norah that's a nice lookin' bench. Well done.

Poster! Does that mean we are doing like a calendar thing? With each bench builder draped across his/her bench....nude with something like a plane (or two) protecting their modesty. I'll be using a block plane, 60 1/2 should do it.

Wonga did you happen to notice that the 4th bench dog hole is slightly off square?

I will need a jointer, jack, smoother and anything else to cover up my gut, man boobs and other unsightliness.

Rob great job on the bench, I have been wondering what you were up to for a while. Good to see you finishing it.

I am about to start my long term bench this coming weekend. Based on the same design by Holtzapffel. My make shift bench is not going to last much longer.

I am lucky to have secured two brand new beautiful twin wooden screws to use in the vice. Will start a WIP shortly.

    Picky buggers aren't you...

Yeah I put it in the blog but forgot to add it here...The two pics on the right are of the bench just prior to leveling the jaws with the top. I put them in because the finished photo is a little dark.

And thanks for the favorable comments everyone...

And jmk89, it is good to see that someone is checking out my blog.

Now what to do next? Is the only problem. Still organising my limited space.

WAX again - what is the difference between car wax and woodworking wax?

Schtoo, if you could hand over the name of that nice smelling wax it would be helpful.

As far as waxes go, I think I know more about the western red eyed snoot; which is nothing. So any advice, help or guidance would be very welcome.

    Imperial!

Luckily I remembered to read the can as I was using it today.

Just make sure you put the lid back on, otherwise it goes all dry and not nice smelling any more.

(Or there is Ubeaut wax. It smells really nice too.)

BTW, nice bench. Sorry I forgot to say that before.

But, if I am not mistaken you are taking the pics from outside the shed? If so, I think you win the 'smallest shed' competition by a long way.
