Bevel Down Chariot smoothing planes did they exsit
Ok so I am looking a making a my first timber plane I have a small block of Gidgee and I am looking at a palm/apron plane. I have looked at many vintage chariot planes as they size and shape are perfect the blade is also held in by a wooden wedge so it ticks all the boxes for deign. The question I have is are they all designed low angle bevel up or are some made bevel down high angle like a jack/smoothing plane?
As I intend to make this plane from timber can't bed the blade at a low angle as the cut away would weaken the plane too much to take any force from the wedge.
I am not yet game enough to try and make a infill style plane but working towards it.
