Bits for Yankee Screwdrivers.
Having bought two Yankee screwdrivers; one is a No. 131.A Made in England Stanley, 7.9mm shank and the other is a No.135, North Bros.Made in the USA 5.5 mm shank. I would like to buy a couple of phillips head bits for these or a magnetic hex head driver holder which will take all kinds of phillips and other head bits. Hope this makes sense.
Thanks,
Michael D. Breen

One (relatively) cheap solution is to buy a couple of cheap screwdrivers from Bunnies, cut the ends off them and cut a slot on the shanks to engage the spring-loaded internal jaws of the Yankee.

The Stanley Yankee screwdriver is now discontinued. However Boker now make a couple of models which are available from The Woodworks Book and Tool Co. in Sydney.
Boker also make a "Standard 1/4 inch hex magnet chuck - can be used in lieu of Stanley Yankee tips for the 130A & 135A". See link:

Hope this solves the problem.

Hey Michael,
I had intended to go foraging tomorrow as I need to get another mag holder for one of my Yankees. I will be able to take both models with me to ensure a fit. So when I find them I will get some for you. Will keep you informed.

If you have no luck locally, have a look at Highland Hardware - http://www.highlandhardware.com/ - they have both slot & phillips bits and a 'universal 6mm hex' socket adaptor for all 3 sizes of Yankee drivers.

You can also try AllTools, I bought a couple of bits for my screwdriver there a couple of years ago (2 or 3)

Yankee Bits
Michael,
I found a hex head holder, the shank just long enough, have notched it and will send it to you. This will do at a pinch for the 131, but is a bit sloppy. It actually fits a 130 very nicely.
I reckon Bsrlee has come up with the answer. I had a look at the Highland site and their holders look good and are reasonably priced. I would not mind getting a couple so we could combine on an order if you like.
(I am very keen on the Yankee stuff. My epoxy-covered 131 has driven hundreds of stainless steel screws into boats and is much admired by others at the boatyard - much better than an electric drill, less graunched heads. Also good for getting in close in corners. I have a Yankee brace, an eggbeater drill and one of the little push drills. They all get used and will last many generations.)
And as a piece of useless information - the Yankee 131 featured in The Blues Brothers - perfect for detaching the control panel in an elevator.
regards
Peter

I can vouch for Peter's enthusiasm for Yankee drivers. He carries one around with him everywhere, waiting to launch into action ...
I did contact Highland Hardware (Tools for Woodworking), and they carry the Schroder brand, which will fit the Yankee. http://www.tools-for-woodworking.com...OD&ProdID=4044
I have a few of these drivers: a couple of #135s, a #130 and a #131. I have managed to squirrel together several bits for each, both flat and Phillips. Keep an eye out on eBay (USA) for these. They come up fairly regularly.
But I also converted one of those inexpensive hex multibit adapters to fit the Yankees, and keep one of these in a #135. I chucked the chrome end in a drill press and ground down the hex shaft with an old grey grinder wheel. It works a treat. Very handy screwdriver to have around since I can use different bits.

Square drive for Yankee
Another slant - Sachy's used to have a square drive bit for the yankee - square drive will knock the sox off phillips head any day and work superbly with the yankee

you could order genuine bits from the uk, they are still available here, sure postage wouldn't be that much.
