Boring large deep holes
Hi all.
I have a small project where I want to bore some large(ish) holes, 30-32mm about 250mm deep into some reclaimed timber, (not sure of the species, but is is hard).
I need to hole to be as clean as possible and straight. I have the drill press to be able to do it, but i am stuck on what type of bit to use.
My initial thought was just go at it with a sharp spade bit, but then i considered an extended forstner or large router bit. At this point I managed to confuse myself and everything stopped!, (here i am!)
Even considered an Auger bit with the feeding thread ground off.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Cheers

If it was me I would use a forstner bit with an extension attached.
Couple things that would cause issues is depth of cut as most drill presses do not travel more than 80 - 100mm. Which would mean that you would have to finish the hole using a power drill. Also make sure that you clear out the shavings regularly or your bit will be stuck in the wood.

Large deep holes may well be boring. Put them on Ebay, there's money to be made in the wholesale business.

Hi Christos,
Yeah that was along the lines I was thinking.
I have access to a metal lathe so the extension should not be problem.
I have an old drill mill. The travel is just over 120mm. I was thinking of simply having two bites at it. Drill the first half, then drop the head and finish it off. (repeat!)
But that might get tiresome. So the power drill might come out. I guess as long as the first 120mm of the hole is pretty, the bottom is not as critical.
Cheers

Make sure you go for a carbide tipped bit
