Default How to make a very small bowl shape?

    G'day everyone,

I am wondering if anyone knows of a good way to make small shallow bowls. I am talking about 50 to 60mm diameter......basically what you could do with a sanding ball. I've used sanding balls in the past, but I've yet to find one that stays together I've also tried a 50mm diamond coated ball, but this just seemed to clog up. Also used a 50mm round nose bit, which worked, but is really quite rough in action, think I maybe need to speed my drill up?

Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (image of one I've done before)

50mm round nose bit...as in router bit? Your drill press can't go fast enough to run router bits, they work at 12-18k rpm

Right, I thought that might be the issue. I will just do them in batches on a big piece of wood, before I cut them to size. That way I could drop the wood onto the router safely.

    Thanks.

Im not agreeing with you here EJ.
I have basically an overhead wood milling machine that runs from 2 to 4000rpm , or 4 to 6000 ? Roughly . I forget , It's slow any way . Tungsten router bits do very well in it , even tiny ones . A similar earlier machine for wood Does around 900 rpm . That's what the badge says but we are going to confirm spindle speed on that one day soon I hope . Router bits will be fine in a drill press . I just did this in mine . 40 mm wide at top . Tungsten is hard stuff and the harder the material the slower it's used , like in metal mills and metal lathes . To fast in these materials and it breaks . Wood just moves out of the way . You just got to take it easy on the speed you feed the wood to the bit . I don't have a 50 mm round nose bit . So just grabbed the V . Clamped it in the drill vice and drilled at what the drill speed was last used for , which was drilling steel , so real slow .

Hey that is interesting....I was thinking faster heh, I think my drill press is running at its middle speed....I'll slow it down and see if that helps.

    Thanks.

That's ok , let us know how it goes .
As long as the wood is clamped down well or in a vice and the only thing moving is the spindle it should be good.

Yeah, having it slower seems to work OK, tried running faster as well, and every now and then it would grab the wood and take a chunk out.

I need to attach the drill press to the workbench, too much vibration. I am building a tool carousel so will attach it to that when done.

    Thanks for the help guys
