Question Box Lectern Plans

I am wanting to get into some woodworking, but have had little experience. I built some small things with my dad growing up, and I recently designed and built a picnic table.
Most recently, I have been offered the opportunity to design and construct a couple of simple wood lecterns for a local university. I've drawn up some plans for a basic, box-column lectern, but was wondering if you could answer a few questions I'm having trouble finding answers to.
1. What material(s) should I use for it to be sturdy, but not too heavy?
2. What suggestions do you have for a base/footing?
3. At what angle should I place the top?

Welcome to the forums. You should find lots of great advice and idea from the folks here.

As for timber, what do you have easy access to where you are in Texas? Ply is always quite stable and relatively light, but isn't always the nicest timber. As for the angle of the top, do you have access to one you can look at and do some measurements on?

Cheers,
Af.
