He was able to fix an old B & D Drill for me.

From your description, I would guess that it is the gearing between the motor and the chuck where the problem lies.

I think that you could buy a whole new unit for the price of repairs.

Im fairly sure the gears are fine, the drill functions/spins its the locking mechanism on the chuck which is stuck. ive taken the chuck off already just need a new one - would just prefer a different chuck just that the stock one seems pretty flimsy. When I get a chance to get the model number of the drill i've have to search what the part number is for the chuck

I had the same problem last year, took it to local electrical repair shop, they advised (with a little prompting) that it couldnt be repaired so lodged a claim on household effects insurance. Paid out $150 to buy a new one. worth a shot.

Ah, makes perfect sense now.

As a suggestion, try soaking the chuck in mineral spirits or paint thinner. Sometimes things get gunk'd up and the soak tends to free things up so that they work freely. Let it sit in the mineral spirits for a day or three.

As for a source for a chuck, try Bunnings or some other home center. They tend to stock replacement chucks and the threads are fairly standard.

As a general rule drill chucks are a standard thing.
Back in the day I put generic aftermarket keyless chucks on all my makita cordless. I have also changed chucks on some of my air drills.

The left hand threded lock screw is also pretty much standard ..... they often get the heads drilled out of them from using double eneded drills.

If ya gor another good chuck of another drill about the same size ..... BETYA it fits.

Around 90% of thread mounted chucks use 1/2 inch UNF thread, making them all interchangeable with each other... occasionally, a smaller machine will use a 3/8 inch UNF thread; they're the only 2 chuck threads I've ever come across.

the Left-Hand threaded centre lock screw should be stock item at most tool repair shops, but I don't like our chances at a bolt supplier!
