A ute load of wood...
Well, after a whirlwind round trip Brisbane-Atherton Tableland-Brisbane in a little under a week, I've come to the end of a brief holiday.
The purpose of the trip was to help sort out my dad's shed, as posted on another thread, but while I was there I made some very good scores on wood, thanks to the generosity of various rellies - a pile of rough-cut red cedar, a large (& heavy!) chunk of dry Cooktown ironwood, and some she-oak. My brother took me over to his firewood lot & we chose what looked like a likely tree with a good-looking bole, & plenty of firewood in the top. I roughly quarted it freehand & hauled it home so I could get it over the big bandsaw & planer. Even though I sealed the ends immediately & kept it out of the sun, the sapwood had started to crack by the time I got it here. Turned out to be a minor disappointment - the tree must have been damaged at some stage earlier in its life & it contained some very deep old cracks & some strange sapwood, which was contributing to its desire to crack. However, by careful hacking & sawing, I think I have got what I really wanted from it - so far it looks like it is behaving now I have it diced into smaller pieces, but you never know with she-oak, so I'm not counting chickens just yet!
So here's a shot of the very messy shed after 2 days of sawing, sizing & planing. The big chunk on the stool at left is half the ironwood, there is some of the cedar on the right at the back, and the several short pieces of cedar standing atthe fronnt right are crotch pieces - some nice book-matched panels coming up, I hope...
Took me all day today to clean up!
But pretty satisfying.
Cheers,IW

Noice! I'm envious. Any raintree?
I started work on a piece Cliffy kindly sent down... and promptly put it aside for a day when I have more patience.

All that time and such a little mess.
Only took you a day to clean, well I must say.

Mess? What mess? it looks pretty neat to me.
You will have plenty of nice timber to play with now.
Polish up a bit so we can see what it will finish like.Scally

Nope, Skew, but a few bits & bobs like some Qld Walnut (just enough for a saw handle) some nice chunks of Brown Quandong, pink Silky oak & so on...
Raintree? Don't know that one - willhave to look it up.... Would like to have dropped in on Cliff & another BB'er up ther, but as usual, I was under severe time constraints - soon, I will be joining the ranks of the retired, & I look forward to some more lesuirely trips!

I will, Scally, but maybe not for a while, unfortunately - busy time at the day-job coming up......
However, just to rub it in, I have no doubt it will finish very nicely, thankyou - good colour & some nice grain pattern - even a couple of small burl areas that will make nice box tops or small panels.

Nice work on the load Ian.
Munruben and I spent 21/2 hours on my bandsaw this morning turning roundish bits of Silky, Melaleuca, Poinsiana, Leopard tree, Lychee, Aus. Rd Cedar and other stuphph into boards and square bits. Great fun!!

Hi Artme - it is fun indeed, marking eack board for its best yield, & plotting all those heirlooms it's going to be part of! And cutting logs has the added zest of all that hidden potential. I'm always impatient to see that first cut fall away & see if I have a winner or just more firewood.
Speaking of firewood, such activity certainly generates a pile of kindling quickly, doesn't it? Wish we had a fire, but SWMBO can't be talked into it, I'm afraid. (I think she knows it would be another excuse to accumulate wood - "look, we really need this for the fire, dear" )
Luckily, there are other family members with wood heaters that are grateful for all the scraps I can provide, and we have enough acreage to absorb the planer shavings as mulch (so far...)
Cheers,IW
