Loni, I'm happy to be proven wrong, but I think you'll find that the timber alone will cost at least one thousand, if not more. Then there's the cost of turning a rough slab into a piece of furniture that won't shred your sheets and nightwear, there's another thousand or more. Then there's the cost of finishing and delivery ... and oops! We're around that magical 4000 figure.
Good furniture, made of good timber by good craftsmen, just can't be done cheap.

You could probably find someone to knock one up from a few sheets of plywood for a bit less. It wouldn't have quite the same look though... Maybe they could run a jigsaw down the edges to make them wavy.
PeterThe other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Sorry if your first posting is getting you so much heat but seriously coming in here and asking a question like that is like walking into a Catholic church and spitting in the Holy water!
It is people like you who see something they like something a bit different something that says they are a person of taste an quality and then set about screwing the designer maker down for a few more $ because you saw something a bit like it but cheaper in a department store!
It is thinking like this that makes people like us only do this for a hobby and drive 20 year old cars that we cant afford to fuel up.
Give me the exact requirements of what you want and I will give you a proper quote itemizing all the costs and I bet you it will come to more than $4000. If you want it cheaper spend 20 years learning how to make it yourself!

I don't think we have to be so rough on the original poster ... let's just explain why it will (probably) cost more, and leave it at that.
Reminds me too much of the woman who wanted a pine vanity built in her bathroom ... not exactly friendly responses there, either.

Thats a nice slab on the walnut one though... SWMBO would never go for one like that though.
(Clarification... Walnut Bed 1)It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Hi to everyone above.
You have given Loni a bit of a roasting but it does confirm the guestimate
I gave him in my email yesterday. Most people who are Non Woodies (Noodies maybe) do not realise the hours of work and sweet that go into a product like this or even one of those lovely pens you guys often flaunt around the forum. So be nice they just don't know.
Hi Loni
Without actually doing any calculations on size timber type etc just a rough
guess, your timber will be at least $1,200 (including your slab head board) plus finishing, bolts, screws and at least a
week and a half of labour say another $2,500 you are up to $3,700 already. That's for something
like the one on the web site you I looked at.
Let me know if you want me to work out the exact price.
I can still give you the name of the timber supplier in southern NSW who would ship a slab to
Melbourne.
Regards Mark

I'll do it
There's a slab at work that's probably 4ft wide and 6-8ft long, red timber I think.
It's straight off the mill so it'll need to be worked on the slab master, then I have to scrounge around the yard an find the rest of the timber, and thickness it because it's rough sawn. Then comes the hard part; making it. There's a solid week of work there.
So if I charge $10 an hour. 24 x 7 = 168 hours = $1680
Say I get a good deal on the timber and get it all for $800
$1680 + $800 plus other materials say... $200
So that's $2680 if I don't charge double the materials as I normally might.
Oh and..I'm in Queensland...
