    Default Buying clamps, sneaky buggers!!!

Went to the Big B to buy some clamps on the weekend. Wanted a couple of the smaller 150mm versions on Irwins Quick Grip clamps. Very handy devices!!

They had them for sale individually for $18 ea, then i spied a 2 pack not far away for $28. Ten bucks for a second clamp, bargain!! I'll take them.

Having a look around for what other brands and styles they had on offer, tucked away right on the basement bottom shelf, pushed to the back out of sight were a 4 pack of the very same Irwin clamps i had in my hot hands. There was no price was on the shelf any where to be seen. So i figured about $40 as a quick guessetimate and took them up to the counter.

    The till rang up $21.90.

Don't get me wrong, i was pleasantly surprised and walked out very happy with my purchase. But at the same time annoyed that this sort of thing seems to happen all the time at most big chain stores and supermarkets. All the stuff you dont want right where you cant miss it, and all the stuff you do want either on the floor shelf or the way up the top. Not new tactics i know, but still a pain.

Wonder how many would have walked away with two 2 packs of clamps and payed $56, when they could have bought one 4 pack for less than half price. Maybe i was on the recieving end of a mistaken bargain.

Enough complaining. Just keep an eye on the bottom shelves.

    Steven.

You're doing well getting them at the big B. My local didn't have them, couldn't/wouldn't get them in. Went to the mum & dad hardware, got them in, but I think they were about $15 ea for 6.

My local Bunnies had a pallet load of 4 packs in the middle of the aisle to the power tool section, I think they were part of the Fathers day promotion.

There was a fair bit of other stuff that I wanted from the same catalog that they either didn't/wouldn't get or hadn't unpacked after a week and a half.

$21.90 is not a mistake then.
I was browsing in Bunnings Cannon Hill last week and came across a trolley full of these 4-packs at that price.
Now I already have 15 of them which is probably enough but I grabbed a couple of packs to give as presents.

I'm sure its against the rules, but swmbo has apparently chosen my fathers day present already

Well looks like I"ll be off to B's to get 4 clamps to give to myself for Father's Day.
    Cheers, Richard

Thanks for the tip off, Steven

I have to drive past Mitre 10 to get to Bunnings and Mitre 10 had 150mm Irwin Quickclamps at a bargain $29.95 each.

On to Bunnies and they had the 150mm Irwin Quickclamps at $19.95 each or $23.95 for a four pack. Got the four pack. At $6 each they match the Chinese garbage.

Moonah Bunnies didn't hide the four-packs on the bottom shelf. They hid them behind a post that holds up the shelves! The eccentricities of modern marketing. Apparently the merchandisers actually refer to this as shelving strategy.

    Cheers

At least they had what you wanted in store. Recently it seems everything I try and purchase is nil stock. I went to Carbatec today to purchase a dust vac that was on special...nil stock, while I was in the store browsing I heard two other customers told that they had nil stock on other items that were on special.

It isn't confined to Adelaide, having the same problem with Melbourne. Currently trying to get 3 items from them, they have been out of stock since May, I keep getting told "will be in 7-10 days, we'll ring you when it comes in". Have already cancelled one $1000 order, might be more to come I think.

Not necessarily the fault of Carba-Tec. Many of the wholesalers and manufacturers do just in time ordering now. Where once they used to hold stock on the shelves for immediate delivery now it can take from weeks to many months to get what uesd to take days. If one person down the line of the supply or manufacture chain happened to falter the whole thing can come to a grinding halt.

Last year we waited over 6 months to get in a particular wax we need for most everything we make, at one stage we were so short of the wax we had to fly in 4 bags from Germany at a cost of $5,000 just to keep production going for a few more weeks.

When we finally got the wax the bottle manufacturers did the same thing to us with a 6 week wait for what up until 12 months before they always had in stock. Because of this we had a 4 month delay on orders to the USA, Canada, Holland and most of our Australian distributors, many of who copped flack because they were out of stock. Wasn't their fault, neither was it ours. Just circumstances beyond our control.

It isn't easy to keep up with supply any more. Carba-Tec and others have a real fight on their hands just to get their products made and as almost everythng is being imported now they are not only at the mercy of manufacturers, but also the shipping lines, customs, freight companies, to mention a few.

Life was a lot easier a few years ago.

    Default re clamps

After reading about the four pack last night the better half and I went to our local bunnies and saw two big boxes with a price tag of $28 and took them to be the twin pack so we hunted around and could not find the $21 ones,so I thought I would get them anyway and then discovered it was the four pack so went to the check out and it scanned up at $21 so beware of the price tags.
    Good shopping

Spot on, Neil. You have found the hard way what some cynics in the management consulting trade (e.g. me) were saying almost 10 years ago. JIT works in well organised places with plenty of infrastructure like Japan, but good old Oz...

I hear what you are saying, but when I check out the latest cattle dog and see an item on sale and then go into the store where the actual item has a special price tag on it, you would expect them to have some in stock.

We used to call it JTL, just too late.

I've had floor staff curse often to me over those people who put the cattledogs together. They seem to be in many companies living off in some ivory tower somewhere and the floor staff cop it. I was mildly amused to see all the GMC stuff on sale in the Bunnings fathers day cattlelog...I bet the floor staff weren't...

Just saw the thread, and have done the round trip already - got a 4 pack for $21, and also a 2 pack of the XP clamps for about $35.
