Default Is this Cadaghi and are there live borers?

Just scored some planks from a very nice guy on Gumtree. He said he'd bought them to be used as steps, but the project never happened and he stored them in a rainforest shed for years.

He believes they are Cadaghi - does this look like Cadaghi? It is extremely heavy. It would help to know, as Cadaghi being reputedly a boatbuilding timber, resistant to moisture swelling, I'm thinking it could be good as a block in the mouthpiece of Celtic whistles I want to make. If not, I might use them to make a workbench.

The boards pictured are those with what appear to be borer holes. Interesting that they were all stored together but most of the boards don't have borer holes. What I need to know is whether there might still be live borers? If so, what should I do?

Quite possibly. My friend has a serving table made out of it. Attractive timber.

those are longicorn borer holes - they are a pest of logs and freshly sawn timber but will not infest/survive/live in the timber once its dry. They're long gone in your boards.

Thanks Kidbee and John. Good to know I don't have to spray Agent Orange on the wood.

Would be good if somebody has a more definite idea on whether or not it's Cadaghi.

Perhaps I can get my friend's wife to send me a photo and you can compare.

im having trouble with screen resolution issues - broke my glasses lol.

Not seeing anything to suggest its not Cadaghi. But the first picture its hard to tell whats moisture staining and whats the real wood colour. Few things it could be. Second picture again... it could be cadaghi or a couple other things.

Guys says it cadaghi, its from FNQ, its heavy enough, theres nothing to say its not - 99% chance its cadaghi.

Here is the photo. Nice rich colour. Your timber needs to be polished a bit before a comparison can be made.

Thanks very much for the photo, Kidbee. Just tried to sand a board back to show you a freshened up look at what I've got, and my little old 1/4 sheet sander died... After I buy a new one in the next couple of days I'll have another go.

Bought a new sander - Bosch PEX 300 AE random orbital - so much better than my old cheapo 1/4 sheet toy. Tidied up one face one of the probably Cadaghi boards to 80 grit. Here's how it looks now:

To my (untrained!) eye, that's looking like really similar grain to your photo Kidbee.

What do you think? Can we officially certify it Cadaghi?
