    Hi springwater,
Sorry mate, seems like I rained on your parade. Its a great idea, I just get a bit cynical at times. I didn't mean it about the IKEA option...

Red cedar slab would be my choice for the table top, should the chairs match somehow?

    Cheers

No worries here Andy except being badly hung over. Watching a glass of red wine accidently spill over a wooden table last night (but could have been early morning) gave me another possibility.

This is probably not the best time to get my thoughts together but I'd just like to say that I raised the question of "quintessential" Australian not for any parochial reasons or nationalistic sentiment and realise the answer was always going to be subjective. Ruffly's statement of "That's the table I grew up with" probably sums up most responses in that a table and chairs functionality can be achieved in so many practical ways such as a milk crate and a real estate sign with sheet draped over it for more formal occassions.

Depending on how you look at it, a table and chairs from IKEA or China obviously functions as an "Australian" table and chairs but I was more interested to see whether a "Australian" character could be ascertained, just like a Chinese one can be recognised for instance.

Maybe upon thinking what form and character an object may take on, we could at least have some consideration for expressing something about the environment that provides the material.

    Thanks to all the reponses.
