    Default Chain Mortiser - Chain set

    Hello wood world - I've just purchased a Makita 7104 Chain Mortiser with a 15mm chain - its in good used condition apart from the chain which has a couple of broken teeth- the chain looks very much like its been apart before to be mended.


    I had done my research before the purchase and know that a new chain will cost an arm and two legs but the purchase price allows me to do this and still be way way in front.

    I've got several questions for the forum that I'm hopeful others have encountered and solved.

    Q: I've been scouring fleabay and the www looking for a third party manufacturer of said chains - I've found a crowd in india that on face value seem to what I'm after - Has any one either had experience purchasing from them or can give me some idea of the quality of their work?

    Q: Does anyone have a suggestion for another supplier (anywhere in australia or the world) that I could have missed?

    Q: Can the chains be repaired and does anyone know of a place in Australia that can replace a few teeth and links ?

    Q: Does anyone have a operators manual or can someone point me towards one on the WWW ( I think the 7104L is basically the same ) as I'm spent hours looking and the only thing I found is the parts manual (very Handy) !

    Q: Does anyone have a chain(s) they are willing to part with ?

    Q: any other advice gratefully received !!!

    Is it a 7101 or a 7104L? I thought the 7101 was 110v? I can’t find a 7401 listed.
    Will the manual for the 7104L do you? I can supply a copy of that manual.

    I would think that if you went to an independent chain saw repair shop they could supply a chain for your machine. I know that that for bar chain saws, the chains can be made to length.

    The Makita web site lists a 19/32 inch chain which is close (0.08) to 15 MM.

    oops - 7104 dyslexic typo !!! (corrected original post )

    The funny thing is that its compliance plate has it as a 7104 - No 'L' - I just asked at the MAkita shop and they hadn't heard of a 7104 that was ever released in Australia as far as they know, and couldn't find any reference to it !?! Its a 240v 50- 60 hz machine 1140W 5amp machine - Think thats the spec's for the "L" as well. - measured the chain and it seems exactly the same as the 7104L spec's. Purchased it second hand from a building company that can't use it anymore as it doesn't conform to OH'S as the blade is unshielded - the newer 7104L has a shield around the blade. Think it may retro fit but not sure I will.
    They thought it was purchased around 2006 ( tag tested at that date) used for doors but superseded by the router lock mortiser. By the looks of it it hasn't done many miles and I know for a fact that many users don't get the full potential from them - the stops where all over the place and looked like someone hadn't set it up properly !

    Lappa - would love a copy if its no hassle !

    Will check out the chainsaw shop but not very hopeful - its a very industrial chain that has many parts to a single link and wouldn't have any other use other than a mortiser ! my chain is 15mm deep but they come up to 32mm.

    Many thanks Lappa - yes the multi national one looks the same as the "L" manual !

    Only thing I can think of is my machine came from a national company that did a bulk purchase - once I read the 'L' manual fully I will possibly work out the differences between mine and the 'L' machines. I haven't nutter out the 3 positions of the blade - mine seems to only have 2 pre sets - I'll have a better look once I get back into the workshop ! - it could have been a grey import but you would expect to find something on the www about a 7401
