    Default The Challenge...

Hi all. I have just purchased some timber slabs - redgum - to do my kitchen benchtops.

They are 50mm thick. Very flat. Very even but usual light saw marks from the slab cutting process.

My first question for the gurus on here is whether I can use an orbital sander to take out the saw marks and prepare the timber for finishing, or do I need to use a third party to prepare the timber for finishing?

If so, anyone in the Penrith area that could be recomended for this task?

    Look forward to the feedback

    Cheers

    Craig

you can do it... get some 40grit sand paper and go nuts. it'll take ages! don't go up a grade (80 grit) untill it is perfect.
A belt sander will be faster and a hand plane will be faster still.

Thanks Lumber! I did hear that your belt sander can dig in a bit and damage the slab. Happy to go slow to get the best result.

    Thanks for the feedback

    Cheers

Without a sanding base, yes it will dig like crazy. Perfectly safe with a base.

OK...a couple of questions. Firstly, I picked up the redgum slabs on the weekend and 2 lovely pieces of Cypress.

I suffered Bunnings, as one does, and cannot locate any 2 pac polyurethane...well...not in any volumes. They had a few tubes of Wattyl but that was it.

Can anyone tell me where I can get my hands on some at the right price? I am in 2208 Hurstville area and / or 2747 Penrith area.

    Thanks!

    Craig
