having just returned from Asia on a foray to assist creating the 2006 range for an importer, I fee lconfident to say that the differences between the prices on these will have more to do with marketing and country of origin than quality of materials used. As a general rule, it seems that sofas from China suffer from bad foam, poor joinery and lesser-quality upholstery fabrics. Vietnam is a bit better, Malaysia seems to be the best of the bunch. Visits to factories confirmed that Chinese manufacturers (only the ones I met with of course, not a big sample I know) don't care about standadrdisation of process in order to measure quality. Vietnamese have more pride and better processes but still have a way to go. The Malaysians have standards that while not comparable to European factories, are pretty good on the whole. Also, the Malaysians speak and understand English far better which I will challenge anyone to convince me doesnt make a HUGE difference. FWIW, I dont like Chesterfields these days but for my client's customers, we managed to see around a hundred. The worst by far was the canary yellow leather one - the best, ox blood leather with highly polishes brass buttons - I know it sounds gawdy, but it really worked well....you'd need to have a place/room that could pull it off though. So.... costs? Ranged from 119US through to 379US from memory for a 2.5 seater. THe firmest (my preference) with the most acceptable finish was 469US for the suite of two singles and sofa.

hi again - they're located all over Malaysia, but the ones I saw were located near Jb in Muar (or however its spelled). Australian distribution is pretty much tied up by several large players who don't deal with the general public as far as I can ascertain. To give you an idea what I mean, I couldnt even get a set 8 chairs for myself at the prices offered to the distributors.... and I was consulting to one of the distributors! We did some great business on "other" things though and it looks like there's more to come.

Hi again - there are many leathers to choose from these days - it used to be Howe Leather and Connelly, but now because of the vastly different manufacturing costs associated with Leather production, good quality material is available out of Asia - even BMW and Mercedes use Chinese leather I am told. Timber-wise the range is equally wide, but you wont find Vic Ash being used in Asia at all unless it is for an Aussie co. Rubberwood, KSK and Radiata frames abound and, depending on joinery techniques, would all be ok. Finally, there's no way I would buy from there unless I was able to see how it was made. I applaud your desire to get a deal - we woodies spend a LOT of time doing just that - but I doubt this particular project will work out well unless you go there yourself - and when you tell them you just want one or two items, you will be politely shown the door - my client imports between 1 and 2 40ft high-cube containers of furniture .............. a day! Then there's the cultural understanding and business methods that have to be grasped...... believe me, going to town and buying a decently WARRANTEED Chester is the way to go in this instance.

""
You only wanted to buy 1 set ? The wood we are using is tropical hardwood and the leathers are from Italy .
The price we have given you is for 1 full container load !
The shipping freight for a 3+2+1 seaters should be around USD 500 """
well i figured that since im formally from south east asia - i shouldnt hav any problems dealing with them but its just different this time round since im now based in melb!
would u know which company i should deal with for brand new chesterfield located in victoria? i dont mind 2nd hand ones (any idea where i can find them)?
im actually very impressed by what i saw on the web from chalburychesterfield.com.au but they are located in south australia....
thanks again for all ur input - greatly appreciated!!

hi again - no real idea where to buy them from in Melb. looked at that site and would love two of the wing backs featured on their front page for my library here at home. It is possible to ask for samples of these things from Asia - they can "consolidate" the items into a container that is coming here, but be advised that they don't let go easily once they have a name and address You will get all kinds of stuff in the mail as well as visits! I would stick to an Aussie firm if only for warranty in this instance. It should be fairly straight forward finding someone here in Melb to supply - I will ask as I am sure you will ..... I did like Chalbury's first sofa too .... I liked the high back over the others actually.
