Competition for Bunnings?
According to this story in today's Australian, Woolies is looking seriously at the idea of setting up a new big-box hardware chain to compete with Bunnings.
Apparently they looked at buying up Mitre 10 but for a number of reasons it didn't work out. But they learned enough in the process to make them believe they could build a new chain from scratch.
Not going to happen overnight, but I think it would be good if someone gave Bunnies a real run for their money.

Interesting article.
I was rather amazed by the market share figures quoted however. Bunnings has 16% of the hardware market and Mitre10 6%?
I don't know what defines the hardware market, but I would have thought Bunnings has more like 50% of the market, if not more.
Would be rather a clever move by Woolies as it directly attacks one of their competitors' cash cows, the commodity market (coal) is doing the rest.
From all reports, Woolies' approach to their suppliers is even more hardnosed than Wesfarmers/Coles' attitude, so I don't think they would have been any kinder to GMC/Triton. Anyway, I think what happened to GMC/Triton was largely self inflicted.

We don't know at this time (and may never know) the names of the 5 parties who expressed an interest in buying GMC/ Triton, but I wouldn't be surprised if Woolies was one of them.
Having a well recognised and diverse brand like GMC / Triton wouldn't be a bad way to kickstart a new retail business....

Imagine it - if you think Bunnings push out all local/small competition then what will a Bunnings and a Woolies Hardware store in the same suburb do to these businesses?
Look at it like a Coles and Woolworths being in the same area - what happens to the smaller fruit shops and butchers then?
Its almost like the impossible has to be done - the only solution for the whole market place (not just competition for Bunnings) is to prop up the smaller guys.

Most of us, when pressed, vote with our wallets. So unless the small guy gives exceptional service or advice, he will disappear because he will never be able to match the prices of the big guy.
At least if Woolies goes ahead we may have a viable alternative to Bunnings. I have a M10 Mega store within 15 minutes drive of me but I've only gone twice. And the second time was only to cofirm my 1st impression that it wasn't worth the trip.
