    Default Complimentary timber for Sheoak

    Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some opinions on timber colours that compliment Sheoak. I am planning a pair of beds for my daughters that will have the frames built out of Sheoak as I have quite a large pile of it that needs to be used.

The idea for the bedhead at this stage is to fit a raised type panel into the bedhead to fill the bulk of this area. I have some Jarrah laying around and it is also very easy to get in Perth so I was thinking of using that, but I am worried that the contrast between the timbers may be a bit too much. As Sheoak is a busy timber, I am also concerned that making the panel out of the same material may be a bit much as well.

The design will be something similar-ish to the below, except king single size, the slats will be a single panel and attach to the frame on the sides. The space between the top of the frame and the panel will also be larger as well as the bottom.

Once I get through this piece I am hoping to tackle my first WIP.

Anyway, thanks in advance for the feedback.

I reckon jarrah would be OK. It's a bit darker, so you'll get reasonable contrast, and it's not usually too busy, so it won't be overwhelming.

I also think Jarrah. I had some dining chairs made a few years back that were solid Jarrah with Sheoak splats. They look great. Obviously you are using Sheoak as your main timber though so it is a different story. You'd be more than welcome to have a look at them, I am in Bibra Lake.

Which colour sheoak is it? I have seen WA sheaoak range from reddish to golden, so that would make quite a difference to the complementary.

Sorry for the slow reply everyone I have been traveling and have had internet issues.

The he timber I have is more of a golden colour than red. I will try and get a photo tomorrow.

@Yowie I would love to have a look. I will pm you to try and set up a time. I work in Henderson so I'm not far from you.

Thanks for the clarification. Personally, I adore WA sheaok so i would make the whole bed out of it. However, if you want a contrast then I agree with AlexS that the jarrah would be good contrast - reddish against the golden and relatively plain in figure.

    I hope this helps

Here is a photo of the timber. The photos aren't great as they are from the iPad but the colour varies a bit. Im starting to think the same way about making the whole thing out of Sheoak but I may have to go and hunt for some more.

Time me to get the design finalised and see how much I have to play with.

I'd build the bed (long rails, foot rail, headboard posts) from Jarrah and use the Sheoak for the panels. My reasoning is that the long rails will mostly be covered by bedding and hardly ever seen, so why use the "showy stuff" on them.

I'd also add a rail at the headboard end at the same level as the long rails -- partly to stop the mattress moving under the headboard.

(the design you've posted looks as though it's intended for use with a mattress and box spring bed.)
    regards from Alberta, Canada
