Cracks in Tallowwood, cause for concern?
Hi gents and gentettes, I know almost zip about wood and I am currently making a timber tripod(pictured in my toys thread) and after finishing the legs which were done from Tallow wood(one word?) because it supposedly slides nicely due to it's oily nature I noticed some cracks along a decent length of the timber.
My problem is that the only tallow left at my local supplier in the desired size has borer holes and I don't really want to use that as-A it has holes in it, and- B, It has to go to Scotland and they may not like seeing borer holes.
If it is oiled is there a chance that they won't grow or should I re-do them from a different timber? If it is another it has to be Australian as I love rubbing in how awesome Australia is.
Thanks for any assistance.
I will grab pics Friday, I am currently not able to get pics.

I'm not sure why you are asking
if it's a commission or gift it should be free of defects
the humidity in Scotland (and hence timber expansion / contraction) will be totally different to that in Newcastle -- another considerationregards from Alberta, Canada

Laziness is the main reason, maybe I'll just send them as spares then.

Structurally, the cracks probably don't mean much because Tallow wood is immensely strong, but Ian is right about being free of defects (that's why I use so much salvaged timber - you can get away with murder...."maaaaate, how else would you get that character" ).
I should say though, borer holes a problem getting into Scotland? Nah - they haven't seen a tree in the wild there for centuries, let alone know what product comes from it.

All depends if the cracks are open cracks or just the black fissures that contrast so well with the yellowish tallow wood. The black fissure don't seem to a hurt the stability or strength while open cracks lead to splinters and not so happy customers.

As the guys above have said. If the cracks are noticeable or you can, whack some waterproof pva in, clamp them up and you should be good too go. Not sure if I have any off cuts here at Lambton, I can have a look if you still need some.

Cheers guys, I'm still yet to get a photo, my phone takes a decent photo but then adds some automatic noise reduction rubbish that kills the detail and I can't turn it off! I forgot to take my camera home Friday so I'll try to do it tomorrow. This is what the tallow is for, please note it's only a mock up and looks quite shoddy and still needs lots of bits and motors to finish it.
