    Default Crosscut Sled Runners

I am about to upgrade the old table saw sled, at my workplace, for a ubeat modernised one.

The current one has hardwood runners that work okay. Viewing crosscut sled plans on the web they recommend aluminium ones and phenolic ones. I am not sure if phenolic is available in Australia.

I would like to hear of what material forum members may have successfully used.

I've used hardwood, but found that weather conditions in my area can play havoc with them. When it's really hot and dry they're too loose and when it's humid or cold and wet they can bind. I guess it just depends on where you're located and the particular timber you use. Now I've got some nice 650mm aluminium ones with 5 adjustable locking guides along the bar.

I've found the UHMW runners to be very good.

Yes, I just read your comments in a 2013 forum thread on that stuff. It seems to be very good but a bit expensive, but I do like quality. I work close to the coast and notice that the old crosscut sled with the hardwood runners develops some resistance sometimes.

Another vote for either UHMW or chopping board runners. You can also get Delrin from a lot of bearing supplies places (such as CBC)

Interesting. Is it expensive and does it come in strips?

I vote the UHMW as well. I have never tried timber runners but made my first set of UHMW runners recently. I was looking at the prices of pre-made and didn't like it. I spent $100 on a section of uhmw and I cut that down myself. My section was about 12mm thick, 300mm wide and about 1 metre long. I look at how many runners I can get out of that and I like the idea. The two I currently have are almost the full metre long.

Also, I don't know if it is just me but I tried ripping the 12mm thickness in half on the bandsaw and a few inches into the cut it just wouldn't go any further.

Edit: This is where I got mine from - E-Plas Engineered & Industrial Plastics - Home
