Default What kind of cut is this called? And how do you do it?

Ok its not a crosscut or a rip I'm taking about....suppose I have a 2x10, and I want to slice it edgewise in half so that I have 2 1x10s. What type of cut is this called? And can it be done with a hand or circular saw? I'm guessing not since you would have to have a 10 inch blade wouldnt you?

FYI by 2 x 10 I'm not using metric, I mean a nominal size 2i nchs by 10 inchs, which is really slightly smaller

You are cutting along the grain so it is a rip cut.

With a circular saw you would probably need a 30 inch blade ! so with the width of the kerf there would not be much timber left. In experienced hands, two passes with a 15 inch saw might do the job.

Alternatively it could be cut on a large band saw or by hand.

It is a rip and it is also called a resawing cut. Typically done with a big bandsaw to reduce the amount of timber lost through the big kerf.

...or use a hand ripsaw and get some practice in for cutting straight and true.

...or...rip down one length with your average 9 1/4 (insert brand name here) olectric saw.
Flip it over and rip down the other side, and the wee bit in the middle can be hacked off with your trusty hand saw.

You cannot resaw it down to 2x 1" thick boards, you will always lose the width of the saw kerf.
