    If you make your own, they cut a little cleaner if there is a bit of relief in the hole.
    Ie. the diameter of the top is slightly smaller than the bottom.

    It's also easy to make fluted dowels by filing a series of shallow grooves in the final hole with a triangular file. Ideally the hole would be drilled at 0.5 mm undersize before filing the grooves.

    Just use a centre punch on the top edge.
    One is enough to stop most glues hydraulicing the joint apart.

    For thick glues ie epoxy a square peg in a round hole is often the answer.
