Making Dowels
Which die to cut dowels from hardwood?
Trying to find just dies from tap and die set to cut hardwood dowels.
To cut Dowels in these sizes
1/4", 1/2", 3/8", and 3/4"
6.3mm, 12.7mm, 9.5mm, and19mm
any suggestions?
Not really interested in the taps unless included at a good price.
Although they might come in handy on a future project.
Any suggestions?
The cheaper the better.
tiaThanks,

Plenty of DIY ways to cut wood threads although not sure how practical it is in the smaller sizes like 1/2'' and down. Metal threads can be very fine and still work but wood threads need to be a bit beefier to stand up to the strain.

You could also notch the thread of a metal nut and use that to thread a dowel.

If you mean strange as in too easy, you'd be correct.
Thanks,

You can buy imperial and metric dies sets on eBay. Aldi had some metric ones a couple of months ago.
They usually cover 4 to 12mm. Imperial ones usually cover 1/4” to 1/2”. Bigger dies are available but don’t normally come in cheap sets and they can be expensive.
Also, you make get a couple of thread pitches in the same size thread eg 12x 1.25 and 12x 1.5 etc.

Was hoping to find what I needed off the shelf.
But since I have to wait I might as well shop here:
https://www.banggood.com/M3-M20-Metr...l?rmmds=search
The 7, 10 , 14 and 20 die.
But the wrench?
I've given up on imperial.
Too hard to work out.
I'll be sanding off the thread anyway.
Does anyone know what right hand thread means?
Blast! Looks like different wrenches for difference size die. Thanks,

Barry, you seem to have a knack for finding hard / complicated ways to do things.
Have a look at this youtube vid
the BIG bonus is you will almost certainly have everything you need alreadyregards from Alberta, Canada

Not if its done right.
A proper dowel plate has some slightly larger sizes holes to bring the dowel down to size in successive steps - if this is done carefully it won't crush the dowel.
Here is a dowel plate we setup to make 19mm (3/4") dowels
The 20 mm holes were used first before using the 19 mm hole.
Even better would be to have a 21mm hole as well.
Dowelmaking1.jpg
If you make your own dowel plate you can generate the diameter of dowel you want compared to the specific sizes dictated to by threading dies.
eg an 8mm x 1.25mm threading die won't produce dowel at 8mm but something closer to 6.75mm. A 6 x 1mm die will make 5mm dowel etc.
The down side to dale plates is it's limited to short lengths of dowel but there are some other ways that use a chisel that allow you to create specific sizes of long lengths of dowel. .
