Grab the jointer and start saving again. It's tax time soon so that might help soften the credit crunch.

wait for the table saw, its far handier than a jointer.

Grab the jointer. Then start saving again for the TS. If you find that your not using the jointer that much at least you can sell it.

+1 for the jointer. You will want both eventually, so get at least one of them on the cheap*

*speaking of which, I see some pretty cheap prices for used stuff on ebay lately-maybe there will be a saw bargain too when you're ready.

IMO it depends where you get your raw timber from. If you're buying retail/wholesale timber, where you can get roughly the right dimensions and just need to straighten it - get the jointer. If you're nicking/recycling timber from where ever you can and need to resize a lot of it, get the table saw.

I use almost entirely recycled timber, and didn't think I'd need a table saw until I got a cheapie. Now it's the most used power tool I have.

If you're recycling timber, your need for a jointer would increase I believe. You need to start with a straight reference edge and that is what jointers do.

However, the table saw is more useful. You really want both, so the question comes down to whether you take the cheap price now or stay on track for the table saw purchase. If you plan to get both, I suppose it depends how long it will take you to make up the short fall. A jointer is not a lot of use on it's own, but if you intend to get one anyway and you can save half the price by buying now, it seems like an easy enough decision to me.

It'll take about 10-12 weeks to make up the savings. So i think i'll grab the jointer.

Just waiting on a response from the retailer to confirm its still available.

The TS i have in mind is the Jet pro-shop and those things are never on sale and never come up on ebay. So I can be pretty safe in knowing that i'm not going to miss out on bargain on it in the next few months. Hopefully the AUD keeps on rallying and the price comes down by the time I have saved enough for it. Not holding my breath on that one though....
