    Just googled him.

Well this is a piece of Oz musical history I've never heard of.... and my musical tastes cover a fair few decades and are definitely not mainstream. I'll check out the vid when I get home.

This must have passed me by back in '75 when I was ... oh... 4 years old.

I have a Jointer on my wish/want list, But the trusty el cheapo Table saw does all that I need at this stage, I had a play on the Shipwrights Jointer at work and it hasn't made me think that I really need one, I reckon that I can get acceptable joints by using a better Blade in the TS. I am saving for a real Table Saw, the old GMC is struggling with some of the Jarrah and Sheoak that I have been trying to put through it lately,
Sometimes you have to do 3 or 4 passes to get through. Maybe a different blade

You can, up to 180 mm on mine. Not perfect but a lot better than trying to saw on a jointer

Choose between a cheap jointer or saving for a TS ? Dunno. Both options are good.

Keep an eye on ebay, some cheap saws seem to be popping up on there occasionally..

My TBW is that a 6 inch jointer may be a tad small. What width boards do you intend to plane?

My 12 inch combo often gets 8 inch plus boards thru it pretty often, so I'd be thinking about saving up a little longer and get something bigger. I know there are some work-around solutions for boards wider than jointer bed, but why make it any harder than you have to?

And I also think that a sliding TS would be another "savings" project. Aside from managing sheet goods better than a TS, you can effectively edge joint a board of greater length than you otherwise might using a jointer. (I forget the math exactly, but I think the board length is limited to the infeed/outfeed table length). Either way, it's not easy jointing long boards by yourself!

Thanks Jefferson. I'd probably be working on smaller scale stuff so 6 will cover most situations, and i'm trying to avoid machines that demand too much space.

Anyway its a moot point now. Just heard back from the retailer that the cheap ex-display model has been sold.

Grumble, grumble, grumble, grumble, grumble, grumble

Thank you everyone for your input.

I'd be going for the table saw first I reckon. For sure both machines would be great, but if you had to get to one first, it'd be the tablesaw for my pick. I've got that Jet proshop that you mentioned and I love it. Everything is so much easier since I picked up the tablesaw. The jointer is great (which I picked up some months after the tablesaw), but the tablesaw is more versitile initially IMO.

Tough choice to face when you have such a good discount on the jointer!

    Cheers,

    Will

I think you should be relieved that you missed the bargain jointer.
I probably would have weakened and bought it.

The best plan, IMHO, would be to keep saving for the good Table Saw - they make everything easier.
Then buy an 8" jointer - the extra length is very useful when you are making cabinets.

Nice work SilentC, I haven't heard The Newcastle Song in ages.
