    Default DIY Coffin making workshop

Another good reason to visit Tasmania.

Wonder if they will have a " Coffin from a Crate" competition

Have a look at this link below

It's a great idea, but it's also a complex thing to do when it comes to legislative requirements. I looked into it after the death of a family member, when the funeral home was offering midrange caskets for six to eight thousand. It's not as straightforward as you might think. There are state requirements for coffins and caskets used in cremation, covering construction materials. Types of glues and finishes are important. They may also be required to be air and water tight, SA requires a minimum 100 micron lining to prevent the escape of bodily fluid but this also needs to be safely combustible.

There are also requirements under manual handling legislation. Commercial coffins are tested for load by putting 120kg of sand bags in them and testing for flex. A funeral director may ask you to provide a test certificate before accepting the use of it. Even then, ADFA guidelines largely discourage the use of self built coffins and caskets. The commercial providers are responsible for their product under trade practices acts and maintain public liability cover for them.
