Default DIY parquetry from recycled T&G hardwood flooring

Hi there! First post, long-time reader/viewer.

I've checked the forums and can't seem to find the answer - sorry if I've missed it.

I was wondering whether I can leave the tongues on recycled T&G hardwood flooring to make parquetry (about 600mm lengths, herringbone pattern). I know I'd have to cut grooves in the ends of every piece, which I'm willing to do if it meant not having to cut the tongue off the whole lot. Would the T&G put strain on the gluing process, if say, the boards weren't completely flat (recycled)? Or would the T&G help to keep the floor solid once it was all done? I'm also happy to pop nails in along the way where the joists are under the subfloor (chipboard)... nail holes aren't an issue, since the floorboards are recycled and full of 'em.

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum, you have had no reply, so I'll give my UNexpert advice.

I think what you are planning should be ok, the only problem I see is the variation of expansion and contraction of the floor compared to the subfloor.
Don't know if it would be an issue or not, but it seems to me that it is very likely the joints in the floor will open up.

I don't have any expertise in this area, so I may be completely wrong, it is just what came to mind when I read what you wanted to do.
If it works it should make a nice floor.
    Regards
    Bradford

Thank you so much. I reckon I'll just give it a crack and see how I go - do a small section first. I'm okay with the joints opening up - will leave for quite a long period, see how it all settles, before filling with timber boat decking filler (I plan to stain the floors quite dark after a good sand).

    Thanks,
    Vee
