    Default DIY Sectional garage door

    Hi all,

Has anyone had any experience making their own sectional garage door? I’m mainly looking to go down this avenue because it’s proving difficult to find any designs that would suit a craftsman style house.

This article makes it look simple, and I think it would be if I could find the same kind of base door to work with. But alas, I cannot.

Any suggestions if you’ve done this yourself would be appreciated.

By sectional I take it you are referring to the type that has 4 or 5 horizontal panels hinged together and fold up along an overhead track.
Why not just get a plain sectional door (flat panels) and then add whatever design you want, use wafer screws and Sikaflex pro to attach your timber elements. Just be careful with the thickness of the material you use as it could foul the head of the opening on the very top panel as it rises to open.,
If you are referring to a standard tilt door, its very easy to make your own. 90 x 35 frame with 1/2 scarfed joints and a sheet or sheets of 6mm or 8mm marine ply. Then affix your design to it.

    I have done a few.
The simpler ones I have made up an aluminium rhs frame and then attached my timber frame to that, I used WRC to keep the weight down. I then had my garage door installer fit up all the guides and tracks and motors
i have also done them with copper sheeting
Be mindful of the weight as the standard door hardware will not support it and you can end up going into more the custom frames with counterweights etc.
The last one I did was clad with Tallowood and cost close to $50,000 with its HD steel framework.
I suggest to discuss what you intend to do with an experienced door installer as you will need to get the correct components to allow for the weight with the installation.

    That's the one!

You mean a standard metal style door? Would wafer screws hold the timber well enough?

Christ, that's quite the garage door.

Wafer or pan head screws will be perfect fixed from the inside of the door
