    Default DIY window plans?

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum.

I am working as a luthier, making bows for stringed instruments. I once turned a pen out our snakewood. Its funny I never signed up for a woodworking related forums before.

So, my father and I, we re thinking about making our own windows for our house that is being constructed. My father insists on wooden frames and all. Although we have some experience with wood, there are way too many thing to consider/invent/design with windows. So after trying to make my homework (on Google) I failed miserably because I saw a lot of window maker on the web, one barely related shed window project and no plans for a window project. Most of the window project related info on web is like "Step1- Size your window.
    Step2 - Go buy windows from a dealer. "

Our window openings are mostly 2.6m X 1.5m and there is also a large bow space for a bowed window.
We definitely need some literature on the subject about what treatments must be applied to the wood and isolation/impermeability and stuff.

I would love to have some plans that could be adjusted to our needs, something tangible to work with. The last thing I want to do is to "reinvent the window".
Personally I like the windows to be with large glass spans, my father on the other hand like many smaller rectangle windows. Any plans would do.

    Thank you.
    Konstantin.

G'day konstantin and welcome to THE woodworking forum. Lots of good advice here. But you appear to have already gotten some.

    Step 1-Size your window
Step 2--Go buy windows from a dealer.

    Cheers,

    Bob

    Default windows

That's mean bob. Surely you must know of a few books or sites covering window joinery.

Konstantin, what style of windows do you want to make. Sash, awning, hopper, fixed pane, disappearing screen.

What type of wall will they be going in. Timber, brick etc.

    Even some photos would help
Don't force it, use a bigger hammer.

Timber is what you use. Wood is what you burn.

    Rat52 thanks.
Well I am not really sure about how they are called, I am thinking about some double hinged windows, with some stationary window spans on the sides, all window span divided in 4 pieces.

    Default Building your own windows

    konstantin,

Have you had any luck and finding any details on building your own windows.

Seems there are a lot of people out there ready to hand over their wallet to the local window shop. We'll leave that comment there.

I also am in the process of locating hardware for windows. I'm a fairly experienced woodworker and am in the process of building all doors/windows/cabinets for a remodeling job that i'm doing on my house. I would say the project is 50% completed....and now for the windows

I'm interested in building a sudeo euro "tilt and turn" window. I'm not sure I want to futz with the tilt option of the window and my instead make a more simple casement with an out swing. I was think of using teak wood for the frams and gettting the 2x pain glass from a local resourse center (very cheap) or having the glazing made for me. However, like you, i'm not finding any information about building your own windows on the web or the woodworking forums. Were are the "real" woodworkers? Way is the project so scary and not done? I must me missing something and by the nature of this email, I'm sure I'll get an ear full

    Kind Regards,
    Scott

    Hi KONSTATIN,

My opinion is to go to your local junk shop or recycler and buy a window of the style you want.

Then dissasemble the window, to see how it was built.

I have done this on a few restorations I have completed and it works well and is also a pretty fast way of learning what is required.

I'm fairly new to this forum and not yet much of a woodwork expert but I'm in a similar position myself with wanting to make windows. Yes, there is surprisingly little info around about how to actually make window and door frames beyond anything dead simple. And the term "Window frames" usually brings up stuff about writing web page code!

My only advice would be to firstly think carefully about what sort of catches, hinges etc you might want to fit - as sometimes you can find you have great looking fittings that are too big for the frame already made. Consider what type of finish you'll be applying and then this might help decide what type of timber you'll use. Remember to think about how they will seal against the weather and make allowance for any seals you might want to fit. Don't forget that water must run towards the outer side of the window frame - my old frames have a lower edge that slopes 'forward' to stop rain water from running inside.

I'm currently just making dummy window joints from cheap pine to learn how to get the molded profiles to look right when the joints are assembled. This is one way to get into it.

Hi are you really sure that you want timber for your windows, I have a joinery shop and make lots of windows but still think that God specially invented aluminium to make windows and boats out of. So much less work and upkeep.
