    Default Double sided tape

    Hi All

I do a lot of template routing and I usually use double sided tape to stick my templates/ guides down if I cant use brads.

I have been using the "bear" branded tape from Bunnings for years with no issues until now.
The tape seems to have changed. Its much thinner which is better and the backing seems to come off easier too.
BUT it doesn't seem to stick as well as the old stuff no matter what I do. Before I peel the backing off I rub the tape with an edge of MDF to help it stick which seems to help.
I have found that I have to use more tape than I used to before. I don't like that because this stuff is expensive.
    Anyone else noticed this.

    Any recommendations for an alternative?

I use the one that Carpet layer use, sticks like the proverbial to a blanket. I get mine from the local carpet place, when I find it next time I'm in the shed I'll let you know the brand if there's one.

Be interested in knowing the brand too.
I also use the stuff from bunnyies (lol)
But haven’t used it in a while so hope it’s still good.

    Cheers Matt.

Mirror tape is fantastic, I use it for aligning drawer fronts in kitchens

I think I bought mine from Bunnings. It was someone's brand of 'Carpet Tape'. Thin, and strong.

I use the Bear stuff from Bunnings also. I hadn't noticed a change in it. It sticks very well to solid timber, and well enough to MDF. I can reuse the same tape a few times if it was between solid timber and solid timber. But I usually use a MDF template to flush trim solid timber, and in this case I can only use the tape once. I don't use very much tape. Two or three small pieces is enough to hold things together, and if they do shift while routing, I can feel that pretty quickly and stop and add more tape (it's very rare that this happens). If I need to do shape a lot of components, I build a proper jig because it is sooooo much faster than messing around with double sided tape and positioning the work piece exactly time and time again.

I also use the Bear brand, but given the pricing I think they must be related to Ned Kelly.

Recently I bought a batch of this stuff. 7 different widths, one roll per width and each roll is 50 metres long.
    Seems OK so far:

woodPixel also gave details of a good supplier on Aliexpress in a thread some time ago.

There is a double sided glue that is more of a permanent solution. A neighbor that works in maintenance for an airline got me some of the stuff. They use it for carpet in aircraft. According to law, if the use by date is exceeded it goes into the trash. In his case the trash is the back of his ute.

I tried to use it for a template. The template was 10mm Baltic Birch. When I pried the template off the work after routing, the Baltic Birch de-laminated. Good stuff but not appropriate for template routing.

I have been using the sellotape branded stuff, up until recently it has been good for what I use it for. But the last few rolls have been really hard to remove from the timber, it tears off in little bits leaving the residue behind.

There is a work around if needed or it can be used instead of double sided tape. Lay blue painters tape on both bits and then apply super glue to the blue tape and assemble. When you are finished it just pulls apart. I even used this to attach an Etag to a windscreen for a single trip and it didn't fall off.

Believe it or not, the Aldi D/S tape (50mm) is fantastic for this kind of thing. Only available a couple of times a year in Aldi stores (like the rest of their "specials"), but when it comes around I stock up and get a few rolls to last me until the next orbit. Just don't use too much, as it sticks like excrement to the proverbial. DAMHIKT....

I also find the Aldi tape works fine or as good as any others I have tried. The masking tape and super glue is also a good method and perhaps less hassle to to remove the template.

Plus one for the masking tape. This trick also works well for "temporary" spray glue for pattern attachment, which is otherwise a PITA to remove.
