    Default Dovetail Jig

    Hi,
can anyone recommend a reasonably priced dovetail joiner? I have read up on a fair few, but they are so vast in $$.
I need to join 8" boards and would also like the capacity to do thick LARGE Machine cut joints 3-5 cm doves.
If anyone wants to unload one, or have the time to share their knowledge in this area I would be keen.

    Hi Mark

You really need to define what you mean by "reasonably priced"

doing dovetails by hand involves minimum outlay. The whole "kit" -- saw, chisel, hammer, DT marker, combination India stone -- should cost less than $100

Ability to cut large machine DTs in 30 to 50mm thick stock will come at a significant premium -- the Leigh Jigs seem to be limited to a max of 25-30mm max thick boards

On top of the cost of the jig, you also have the cost of the dovetail and straight router bits to cut dovetails in 30-50mm timber and they don't come cheap!

I know of only one dovetail bit capable of cutting timber thicker than 1".
CMT item number 818.706.11 -- which can do 31.7mm (about 1-1/4")

So the OP might be looking at purchasing a custom bit.

Mark, I was in your situation some time ago (wanting to do large section joints) so I made my own templates from stock alley. It worked so well that I sent the drawings and specs to a company in china and had a proto type set CNC made for me. They turned out terrific, anodised and laser etched. Very professional and quite marketable. If you do a search on my earlier postings you'll find some pics. I also found another Chinese company that made me a suitable cutter for US$40.00 plus freight.. Carbitool quoted me AUS$300.00 plus GST for a one off custom cutter.

Here's the link: Is there a market for a large dovetail jig kit?

I think that porter cable one will only do up to inch and an eight material.
I could sell you a complete kit Mark, but it may be a bit pricey for you. The other alternative may be to make your own. I'm happy to send you the drawings and you could cut the two templates from ply.
