    Default Dowel distances

Gday ...have some stock of 25mm oregon pine boards i want to join .
Am i best to put some 8mm dowels in this and if so how far apart do i put them?
Or do i use pocket screws?
    Its 4 boards of 25 x 80 X 1600mm i want to join [twice] to make up 2 sides of a bookcase

I know this is my choice but was wondering which join you blokes would choose?

    cheers mick

If the edges of the oregon boards are clean and straight and mate properly with the adjacent piece, then you can glue them together as is without dowels or screws. But if you are choosing to use something in the join for piece of mind, then I would use 5 dowels. One in the center at the 800mm mark, then one each 30mm from the ends (be sure to account for any over length in the boards which you may trim afterwards), and then another two dowels between the first and center dowels ~415mm from the ends.
