    Default Do Drum Sanders Snipe?

Do you have a small drum sander (250-400mm), and does it snipe?

I'm wondering if it is worth buying a small one to remove the slightest amount of planer snipe. Any recommendations? Jet, Carba-Tec, Timbecon?

    I've got a timbecon one.

Like all machines you must check all the adjustments when you set up any new machine.

Mine doesn't snipe, but neither does my gmc thicknesser

Mine's a Jet (Performax! - Oops I didn't mean to say Powermatic honest!) and it doesn't snipe either.

The small ones have an open end so you can effectively double the width of the item being sanded. This does take care or you'll get a ridge in the middle of the piece. I have seen a couple of the "lesser" brands (and I can't remember which ones I'm sorry) which didn't appear to be able to be adjusted properly to get this to work. This was because of an out of parallel (bowed) bottom bit.

    Cheeers,

    Hi Graham,

I've a Performax 16-32 and they can snipe if the in/outfeed rollers aren't set proper (which is pretty easy to do). I used to have issues with snipe on my thicknesser but spent a few hours tuning it and has minimised the problem to a degree where it isn't worth worrying about (a few quick passes with a handplane will get what I want).

    Good luck,
    Cheers,

    Al.

    Thanks all for the help.
Seeing three of you have Performax I bought a Performax 10-20, small but all I need.

Great to se you bought a drum sander, you said it was to remove snipe from the planer if your planer is producing snipe it is not set up correctly or it is faulty
