Default Does The Dude know what he's doing?

Here we have a screenshot of the latest promo from Rockler.

Does this dude know which end of the chisel to use? Has he EVER used a mallet in his life?

    Capture.JPG

Hint..... why is his chisel back-the-front!!!!

Sometimes I wonder if I should go into advertisement. You know be a male model, no underwear commercial as I certainly don't have the body for that.

it should have been spot the errors

    1. Chisel at 90 degrees to direction mortice should be chopped

    2. hardly surprising as the chisel he's using is too wide for the mortice.

    3. chopping the mortice after tapering the leg is just plain silly.
    a. it will be at an angle to the flat and square part of the leg
    b. the leg will bounce -- look at gap between the top of the leg and the table

    4. the table he's using is too flimsy for morticing -- too much bounce

I'm sure there are additional comments
    regards from Alberta, Canada

    Well . . . .

Did he drill the mortise out and is now smoothing the sides?
    Is the mallet really necessary?
Probably because the chisel was never sharpened properly.
It is an awkward position but probably at the request of the photographer.

    I've seen worse.

The mortice isn't being chopped, it's being side pared. Hence the paring chisel of wide proportion. Note waste on bench, not typical of chopped mortice waste. As for the angle of use of the mallet, one of the great advantages with the carver's mallet is its ability to operate at any angle only limited by the dexterity of the operator.

He's probably got that expression on his face as the photographer asked him to flash his ferrule or stick his tang out...

No no no... They went to a modeling agency and asked for a mid 30s guy with a check shirt and jeans. When he arrived they put a chisel and mallet in his hands and said stick the pointy end on the wood and hold the thin end of the round thing and hold the thick end over the end of the pointy thing.

Then the model did his smile thing and the photographer did his photography thing.

    Quite simple really.

So, in reality, he does know what his doing but just not doing woodworking.

Probably the same photo agency that does all the photos for McDonalds burgers and Subway's products - any similarity of the photo to the real article is purely coincidental.

Who cares if the model is a competent wood worker or not?

Well, unlike the photos on a very prominent Australian online woodworking retailers website the image is clear, the description is OK and it actually shows the product in use. Its not some crumby grainy image with a misleading or at best a poorly described product. So I think the photo & advert is successful.

That image is no longer at Rockler 28" x 40" T-Track Table Top - Rockler Woodworking Tools so I guess they either refresh their website regularly or listen to social media feedback.
