    Default easy kids project/s ??????

I have been "volunteered" to organise a simple woodworking project during craft week at school and am looking for ideas.

It will need to be for preps (about 6yrs old) thru to grade 4's (10yo) and needs to fit into about 45mins.

I have thought about yoyo's as long as I cut the blanks before hand but any other ideas out there????

Default Book / CD / DVD stand

My first woodwork project - of course, back then it was for 'videos'. Your kids can cut 150x12 pine into 150 pieces, drill 3 holes (using a pre-prepared jig) and glue 3 pieces of dowel for the 'shelf'. If you want to make it harder, they can shape the ends with a jig saw or surform and sand paper, then finish with quick drying stain.

If I can find mine, I'll post a photo!

    Wood Whistles, Rowan.

Guaranteed to work and to drive the parents crazy while the kids love them.

Email me through the forum if you want to take it further.

    Cheers,

Hmm, 6y/os? they could nail two precut pieces of timber together to form the shape of a car(short roof onto long body) then nail or screw wheels on that are pre sliced from a large dowel.
The 10 y/os could build a tool box by cutting the base and sides to length. and nail between two precut ends and cut dowel to length to slot into pre drilled holes in the ends.
Somewhere in the middle is the change over. )

One of my first projects as a child under 10 yrs old was a tool tote ie. an open box with low sides and high ends, and a dowel handle running the length of the thing between the ends.

Precut the bits and all they need to do is thread the dowel and nail the sides and bottom in place.

Maybe some type of crayon box? You could pre-cut biscuit slots (and a dado or thin kerf (depending on your wood thickness) for the bottom to slide in) and have the kids glue 'em together using clamps (also, maybe give it a hinged top using small dowels). Gives 'em a quick lesson in basic joinery!

I have a book called woodshop for kids by Jack McKee. It has some great ideas in it. This will take you to the website where you can look at the table of contents (including the names of 52 projects - most of which are pretty simple, although you will have to translate the stuff from US to Australia) and read some reviews.
If there is a project that you like, PM me with your details and I will send a copy to you of the relevant pages, but I reckon you will find the whole book worthwhile.
Best of luck with this very praiseworthy activity on your part.

    Cheers

Pencil cases are well liked in that age range.
Easy to prefab all the bits
