Just get 1mm abs pre-glued, wife’s iron and away you go. To trim use a trim router with a 2mm radius bit, ball bearing won’t clog up (mine hasn’t anyway and I have done a fair bit now).
Probably take you about one whole day to edge and trim a whole kitchen if all the parts were cut out. You will probably find it is easier to cut the carcasses, edge then assemble and install. After that move onto the drawer fronts and doors, that way you won’t have a massive pile of chip board in your shed waiting to be edged and assembled.
It is a slow process but you will learn plenty along the way.

Thanks for all of the advice, guess I'm just going to have to use the old Iron edge banding. Not exactly what I wanted but once built the new cabinets will look better than the 20 year old ones that are in there now, and I guess the edge banding will only be visible when we open the cupboard doors anyway and I dare say no one will really take any notice of them.
