    Default epoxy river finish

I am having a go at making a small glass coat epoxy river table between bits of Huon pine and was interested to find out what people might have done to finish their tables, i didn't want to flood the top with clear epoxy, not sure that lacquer is going to stick to the epoxy or even a livos oil.
thinking i'll have to sand and buff the epoxy then maskup and finish the wood to finish it. Any comments or idea would be appreciated, Thanks.

Hi, it may be a good idea to re-post this in the Finishing forum to attract the attention of experienced finishers. It depends on what kind of finish you want to end up with. Shellac is a very adaptable finish that is highly compatible with most surfaces. Neil Ellis (UBeaut forums owner) would be the expert on this one I think.

Polyurethane, both single and 2-pack, does bond to epoxy.

The huon will be the stick in the mud. Some single pack nitrocellulose lacquers will work on huon. Ones that have thinners as thinners. As a rule avoid finishes with turps as thinners. 2 pack usually best.

I'd normally prefer NCL but I'd be using car top coat clear, it is UV resistant, so will help the epoxy resist any light. It can also be obtained in flat/satin/gloss to suit your preference.

The epoxy i use was Glass Coat and Pearlex true blue tint. Got it from the FibreGlass shop here in Hobart, very helpful staff. i like the way it has a "sparkle" rather than a flat block of colour. i wondered about mixing a little true green (if there is one) to pour in after the initial pour of blue. This is the first time i've done anything like this so making it up as i go along. i used a melamine form which i lined with cut up plastic bag from my dust collector. it came out ok but had wrinkles underneath, and also needed to clamp it down with 3 clamps a side rather than just the one in the middle to stop the wood from moving, the epoxy will seep into the tiny gaps.

I can't help you with your finishing question, but I felt that I had to say that I really like your table. I think it looks fantastic.
