Default Exotic wood African Ebony or Queen Ebony timber

    Hi all,
Im after some ebony timber around the 40x40x500mm ive tried looking on the net, and I cant find anyone who has that size only smaller. Does anyone know of any suggestions on where to get some? Im located in Melbourne south east suburbs. I dont mind buying from interstate and paying for freight.

    Thanks,

Here's where I used to get Queen Ebony, Timber merchants Australia & Worldwide (but not sure if he is still up and running) other ebonies are sometimes available from your specialist suppliers.

Why do you need that timber specifically? Many other timbers that are more easily available, even your local redgum, can be ebonised. I use a solution of steel wool/vinegar/old tea bag - leave for a week then strain. Use by painting on then leave piece in sun till dry, repeating until you get desired colour.

Default The real mccoy----african ebony & similar species

Hi ---Genuine ( combretum imberbe ) & mpinga.(species of EBONY) ---cannot be artificially created ---total nonsense !

I live in Zambia and Zululand. -------its unique ---turns extremely well --but hard to polish /remove scratches from turning tools with tungsten tips

I have turned /carved this hardwood for 25 years ----Cannot be artificially stained ----

khaya Nyasica is another jet black variety found near lake Tanganyika. --

Very heavy ---a. log I have weighs 20 -30 kg ---rather pricy for export to Australia --check with your customs
regulations if its ok to import --will send you a free chunk --if u are willing to pay the airmail ---

(I TRIED to attach foto of goblet I turned --but failed repeatedly ----good luck

You could try Brittons Timber in Dandenong, they may have some or may be able to get it in for you. If you could settle for Macassar Ebony, you might have more luck, but the chances of getting solid black in the size you're looking for might be a struggle.

    Regards,

Woodyo, there’s a nice guy who sells Queen ebony through the market place on this forum. Scan & send him a pm.
He is likely to have the sizes you want & is very helpful. It’s a nice almost black wood but not a true ebony.

Also try Trend Timber in Sydney or Anagote Timbers in Marrackville.
