Default Expoxy / Filler Question for Marri

    Hi

A couple of questions. Which is the recommended product to use to fill the knots / holes in Marri. I have done it years ago I think I used West Systems?

Also is it ok to fill the voids with the epoxy etc and then use my planer / thicknesser / bandsaw to machine it?

    Would it damage my blades?

    Thanks very much.

I've used West Systems for this - works well. No problems with machining or planing, just make sure not to breathe the dust (or fumes when you're pouring it).

There are a few different options and everyone will have their favourite; my old work generally used Techniglue and black pigment paste, we did also use a casting resin from Solid Solutions for some finer jobs as it was quite runny and filled little cracks well. I've seen plenty of talk about West Systems here as well, everyone has their favourite and there's probably not a whole lot of difference for most applications. Just make sure to fill any deep holes in stages; too much in one go will overheat and fill with bubbles.

In any case, it's fine to run it through your machines

I've used all three: casting resin for large voids that you want to leave clear (think it can be tinted, but I never have), West System for filling fine cracks - it seems to creep into the depths quite well - and Techniglue or Adhesive Engineering equivalent for large voids that will be coloured. As Elan says if you use casting resin or West System, you must do large voids a bit at a time, as they will shrink slightly, more so if they get hot while curing.
