Default finally made a board. / trivet

It's always annoyed me getting hot dishes out of the microwave.
So I made a board out of spotted gum and Vic ash. That fits under the door.
So far so good. Think it ended up 14mm thick.
    Finished with hard shellac
    my wife seems happy
    thanks for looking

Nice work. I'm interested to see how the shellac holds up to the heat/moisture of hot dishes.

That's part of why I've done it to see how long the shellac go. If it goes alright over the next few months I'll coat the other boards the same but have not finished the other 2 boards

I thought the same thing as @elanjacobs when i saw this. I've seen traditional french polish turn opaque when a pizza box was placed on it for 5min and that's just shellac isn't it? I guess it makes for a good experiment though as you've noted, easy enough to re-finish with something else if it doesn't work out.

    Nice job.

Well so far so good. Cooked rice 22 minutes in microwave. And left corning ware bowl on board till it cooled down. Not a blemish in the finish!

It's not often you see a follow up post like this, thanks for the update. Can you remember how many coats, brushed/wiped etc?
Been thinking of trying the hard shellac.
