Thread: Fine cracks in wenge timber

44Ronin and elanjacob, I am pretty sure these are actually cracks in the timber, not grain, as they are not uniform over the whole of the 200 x 200 block or the veneers I cut from it. They appear to be stress cracks.

anyway, today I mixed up a batch of epoxy glue, coloured it black with Tempura Paint Powder, only a tiny amount required, and following aldav's comments, and AlexS' advice, I used a rough rag to vigorously and heavily wipe the epoxy in along and then across the grain. Will give it 24 hours and sand it off. Will post pics and comments of finished result

I sanded the side of the veneered board this morning, the side that I vigorously rubbed tinted epoxy glue into yesterday with a rough cotton rag ( an old tablecloth).

The result was very good, much better than the first attempt where I wiped it with a sponge. It is still not perfect, as seen from the last photo when taken with the low angle of the light. Will fill these tiny hairline cracks with white shellac as a grain filler, as suggested by Mobyturns above, and sand it off before oiling with the finish coat.
