Default Someone to finish 4x2 hardwood lengths for lamitating

Hello everyone, I have a number of old hardwood joists, 4x2, that I would like to get squared off and planed so I can laminate them into a benchtop.

Each is around 4m long, and I've found that trying to square and finish them with an electric plane is not ideal.

Does anyone know where I could get them run through a suitable thicknesser or similar? I'm looking at about 12 lengths.

    I'm in Sydney's east.

    Thanks

If they are old hardwood floor joists then I can bet there will be more than one nail lurking beneath the surface. I for one would be very hesitant about running these through my thicknesser and ruining a set of expensive blades.

You could perhaps try a men's shed but I am with Stewie on this

Yes, I made a few calls today and got that feeling. However I got the feedback from Swadlings that if I run a plane over it, they'll at least have a look (ie I stuff up some relatively cheep electric plane blades). It may be simpler to spend a bit more time post rough planing to simply true it up though. I'll see how I go.

It did sound like people have previously claimed to have removed all nails, etc., and seriously screwed some gear up.

    Thanks for your thoughts guys.

    Hi

Going to a Men's Shed is a good idea. If your local one is like ours, they will have a metal detector hanging on the thicknesser.

How badly out of square are they ??

Are the "4" sides not parallel ??

If they are parallel, why not just give them a light plane to make them better for laminating, then laminate the top together.

Once the top is laminated make a sled, clamp a set of rails to the desk sides, put router in sled with 25mm bit (if you have a router that can take a 25mm bit in a hard timber) and use the sled to level up the bench

This is how I levelled up my bench tophttps://www.woodworkforums.com/f213/k...ml#post1526459 If you scroll down to post #57 the last photo is the Sled, I did not have a pikky of it in use but If you need help I can explain it to you .
