Fireplace Mantel for client
Just finished making and installing a large (1.425 high by 2.25m wide) fireplace mantel for a client based on a picture from a magazine. Not my normal line of work but it was for a returning customer that is ultimately being painted white so timbers weren't important.
It is 18mm MDF rear and framing with 9mm MDF front skin. The mantel shelf is from solid 290x35 pine as it will support pot plants on top. The top shelf is supported by the MDF frame but also a 110x110 pine mitred moulding. The bottom of the main mantel has a 42x19mm hardwood mitred moulding for effect.
The columns have corbels made from MDF on top of the same pine mouldings used on the shelf but the top lip cut off and then cut in half to insert a small square bead for effect. The thickenings on the column bases are from the clients' leftover 270x40 hardwood planks mitred around the 300x70mm MDF column frame that doesn't go all the way to the floor (to avoid any moisture coming in from washing the floor).

The client is doing all the putty filling/priming/painting to save costs although I started the putty work to show them how to do it. The 180mm surround around the actual fireplace will also be tilled by the client.

My jobs done and the client is very happy but I can't wait to see how it looks when finished (after Xmas??).Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

LOVE a big honest fireplace. Needs an open fire to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate in front of too

Good job on the mantle. I did one about 10 years back and was pleasantly surprised just how easy it was to get something that really impressed most people that have visited. I think a fireplace just does not look right without one. Its also something to hang a few large socks from this time of year.
Regards
John

That looks very nice indeed. How does the mdf hold up with the heat?
