I'm reporting back as promised.

The photos will of course be on their side as they always are on this forum despite them being the correct way up on my desktop.

I used epoxy as advised to repair the break. Tricky to clamp, but that rope worked well - twisting it to tighten.

Used a router to make that channel. I didn't taper the ends - told myself that the curved ends matched the curve where the leg fixed to the back.

Then for added strength, I epoxied a piece of stainless threaded rod in the bottom of the channel. I had that idea when the person I was repairing the chair for told me that they work in orthopaedics and with a bone break like that they would ponder inserting a rod.

Just had to then glue in the filler piece and do my best to colour match it.

Finished in hardwax oil to match as best I could the original finish.

First time I have tried that sort of thing and it worked out okay. Took 4 hours in total.

Thanks for your collective advice.
