Thread: Can I use Floor Boards to Make the Sills and Reveals for a Window?

Hi,

I'm working on a project with 550mm thick stone walls. As a result I need to get timber for 300mm wide sills and reveals. I'm looking for a rustic look and the timber will have to match large timber sleepers we have renovated and placed in the stone as lintels. We have a small budget and a tight timeframe.

An idea we are toying with is to use Floor boards and achieve the 300mm width by placing 3 or 4 together using the tongue and groove in the boards. We have a Makita table saw and drop saw to cut to suit.

I have red ironbark sleepers downstairs and 18 windows with Maple colour sleepers upstairs. I'm currently looking at Red Ironbark flooring downstairs and BlackButt flooring for the top. These are less than $4/m so pretty cheap and good quality timber.

Note: In another building on the property there are cypress pine floorboards used as sill plates in a Rammed Earth wall. These seem to be working fine with no undue warping or movement.

QUESTION: Is this a stupid idea? Will the moisture movement cause warping etc of the floorboards and make them not suitable for sills. Ideas....
