Fold away Wall bed plans
Just seeing if anyone here has attempted this or know of a place that has plans in Aus. As we are expecting our little 3 bedroom place which consisted of a spare room and a computer needs to now have a nursery. I refuse to give up the computer room so we will no longer have a spare room for guest. I did a quick search on the net and a site called Murphy Beds came up which has hardware and plans for the foldaway beds. I was hoping to build a desk for the computer and incorporate a fold down bed to use when guests arrive. Is the US or Canada the only places to get this hardware and plans

Good question, hopefully to be answered.
My web searches found nothing in Australia, only UK, Canada and the US.
The Murphy Bed seems to be a separate patented type.
I would love to get the hardware, I think some creativity might then be possible, depending on which of the alternatives the hardware is for.
Good luck, I will be following the responses.CJ

I actually found a couple of places around Aus that make the Murphy Bed but I will have to check and see if they sell the hardware. Its seems however from looking at the forum that a lot of companys dont want to sell you hardware for anything they make. They just want to sell the finished product.

Check Rockler, I'm pretty sure they have one you might like.
Here's the webpage: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?p...r=murphy%20bed
This one is horizontal but I've also seen vertical units somewhere in the past.

Rockler site is great.
For AUS$400, you can get thePlans for the queen bed and the hardware. Say $100-150 to ship to Oz? Probably have some customs duty, too.
They show both vertical and horizontal, single, twins and queen.
Thanks.CJ

I sent Rockler an email to find out the cost of postage, if others are interested we may be able to get a discount on postage for bulk. I will post their reply.
Got the prices for shipping to Oz but this is just one set of plans and hardware.

Murphy Bed kit
I'm new to this forum - found it when Googling "murphy" or "foldaway" beds.
So I'm wondering if anyone has found an Aus supplier of the kits like Rockler have.
Or has anyone actually bought one from them.
Cheers

Thank you for the link. Just what we were looking for to put in our new house we are designing. Makes the inclusion of a library room workable.
Cheers

Murphy bed
Thanks for info.
Unfortunately the Robina site has a DIY "mechanism w base" product not a "mechanism only". There are other sources of these in AUS as well, eg www.interfar.com.au. Somewhat surpisingly [to me anyway] the Robina site also shows dimensions in inches not cm).
Another AUS site is www.tiltawaybeds.com.au, although I don't think they have a DIY product. They do have a variation called the Sedabox, which uses a folding mattrress like a sofa-bed.
I have also found another US mechanism at www.wbsdistribution.com where you can also download a bed building plan for free (it's a link on the Products and Price List page). This mechanism uses springs, unlike Rocklers which uses piston struts. Apparently there are pros and cons to both, one being visibility of the struts. I have asked WBS for a delivery to AUS price - I'll let you know what I find.
It is also worth taking a look at the video on the Rockler site. www.rockler.com (seach for Murphy beds"). One of the advantages I see of a bed that uses its own base as the "concealment" rather than a "bed in a cupboard behind bi-fold doors" is there are no cupboard doors at the side of the bed when it is opened out/down.
And for those interested, take a look at www.murphybedsnationwide.com/sofa-bed.cfm for a neat update on the old-style sofa bed using a Murphy bed.
Cheers

Well after much searching I downloaded the plans from plansnow for their murphy bed. Hardware from rockler is about $245 or so US. I found a seller in Canberra who sells the hardware which is for the tiltaway bed, they want $1400. So thought I would search for seperate hardware. The plans now one has a pivot plate both male and female versions for the bed to swivel on and uses the same sort of strut you have in hatch back cars to make the bed easy to lift. Found a company in Penrith http://www.aussiegasstrutcompany.com/
who will make a strut to you specifications so they will be of use. Now the other problem. Anyone have an idea of where I can get the pivot plates from. All it is is one metal plate with a hole in it and one that has a small bar attached which then fits into the other plate. Fairly simple thing but checked at Bunnings and they have nothing that will suit. Would anyone know the best place to check for these. Should I get someone to fabricate it for me. If all works well we may have a cheaper priced hardware kit for the beds.

Hafele
Iknow that Hafele sell full foldaway beds but I'm sure they also sell the parts.
If you do a search on their site on "foldaway bed" at http://www.hafele.com/au/products/97.asp
Several options will come up.Specializing in O positive timber stains

We had the "Guest" problem once. Our solution was to purchase a convertable sofa. It was comfortable to sit on but a real pain to sleep on.
