    Default Forstner bits.

Well clumsy me dropped a 32mm TC tipped forstner bit and of course it fell between the rubber floor mats and broke off a side cutter. Tried to use it and it now wanders. So I go looking online for a replacement and heaps of new 3 blade versions are available.
Has anyone bought one of them and if so how do they perform?
    Thanks,
    Rgds,
    Crocy.

A long shot you could look into. A good sharpening place that can do repairs should be able to braze a new piece of carbide where the old one was and resharpen the bit like new again. The rub will always be whether the work justifies the cost.

Studio Dubbled here in Brownsville carry a good range of the Carbitool (carbide & HSS) & FAMAG (HSS) forstner bits. Both are standard two cutter style designs and are good, though the FAMAG's are pricey!

I did a genuine Ebony PM with the FAMAG's, they handled it but it also knocked them around, reduced their life expectancy somewhat, imho better for softer woods.

I found the FAMAG's to be very dimensionally accurate, the Carbitool's not so - bit hit and miss, good for PM's but may not suit applications that require more accurate holes. However for price & general performance they win hands down over the FAMAG's for PM's.
