Hi burraboy, the keys are set askew on the big one, it's just the camera doesn't show it. You are right it helps hold the panels together. The keys on the smaller ones are parallel but still tapered.

How did wood workers of centuries ago assemble and secure larger panels of wood?
Hide glue simply would not last in the kitchen! Yes, it's very clever but, it is also very old.
I can't think of a large and modern application which matches your replication of the technique.

It has taken me a while, but here are the results of my interpretation of that fine design you introduced to us. Just a bit of pine recycled from a pallet with some oregon offcuts for the keys. Parallel rather than tapered keys and I T&G'ed the sides of the pine as well.

    Next Xmas solved already!

Here's this morning's play. I went bigger and tried tapered keys as well. They are definitely the way to go, marginally longer to knock out and a much better fit and locking action.

A couple of things to try tomorrow and I'll just about have it out of my system for the time being.

Nice work. Keep them coming, I think you are on a roll.

tapered is good because if the key shrinks you can knock it through further, that's why I left mine a little long. My taper was 1/8"

My wife's company imports originals of these from France. We can't get enough of them. You've done the ones on this thread very nicely, well done.
